IMPLANT DENTISTRY - ADVANCED FAMILY DENTISTRY

In today’s world, suffering from a missing tooth immediately results in unfavorable consequences such as loss of self-confidence. Because our appearance plays a huge role in our mental and physical health, replacing a missing tooth and restoring our smile is vital. While there are many options for tooth replacement, implant dentistry is considered the ideal solution. This is because it is permanent and is as durable, if not more, than a natural tooth. If you are in need of one of the most trusted tooth replacement options available, Advanced Family Dentistry offers dental implants in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?

A dental implant is a prosthetic device that replaces and mimics the natural tooth’s structure. This procedure goes further than just replacing the visible part of the tooth (the crown). This procedure provides a titanium, prosthetic tooth root that keeps the structure securely in place for an entire lifetime!

HOW DOES IT WORK?

This procedure is comprised of three separate parts:

  • IMPLANT
This portion of the device replaces the root of the tooth, is screw-shaped and made of titanium, a biocompatible material. Biocompatible means that the body will not reject it as a foreign substance, meaning the implant will fuse together with the bone for unfailing support.

  • ABUTMENT
The abutment is attached to the tip of the implant. It acts as the attachment site for the prosthetic tooth.

  • CROWN
This is the prosthetic tooth that is designed from a mold of the surrounding teeth. The crown is custom made to match your natural teeth for a beautiful, natural looking smile.

The dental implant process is split into three main stages:

  • PLANNING
At Advance Family Dentistry we strive for perfection. We work diligently with Sirona and utilize 3D Galileos Cone Beam technology. This allows us to take a 3D scan and provides us the safest, most accurate measurements of bone structure. After creating an exact treatment plan we send all information to a lab which precisely fabricates a custom made implant placement guide.

  • PLACEMENT
This stage entails the dentist burying the titanium implant into the jaw bone with a dental drill. Dr. Mosby will first need to take Galileos x-rays of the jaw area to ensure that there is enough bone to support the implant. Then, after administering the necessary anesthesia, he surgically inserts the prosthetic root into the bone. After this, the patient must wait for the implant to “osseointegrate” or fuse together with the bone. This process can take up to 6 weeks. Afterwards, the patient returns, the dentist exposes the tip of the implant and attaches the abutment. A temporary crown can be placed onto the abutment until the permanent crown arrives.

  • RESTORATION
Once the custom crown is completed, the patient returns to our office to replace the temporary crown with the permanent one. Other than scheduled follow up appointments, this is the final stage of the process.

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR THIS PROCEDURE?

While implant dentistry is by far the most reliable way to replace a missing tooth, not all patients are candidates for the treatment. Here are a list of factors that may mean implants are not right for you:

  • You are a smoker and are not willing to quit for the duration of the procedure
  • You have cancer, diabetes or periodontal disease – click here for information on our LANAP procedure that treats this disease
  • You do not have enough bone in your jaw
  • You have undergone radiation in the cranial area
  • You are unwilling to wait up to 9 months for the procedure to be completed
  • You are unwilling to pay for the procedure (this procedure is generally more costly than dentures or bridges but insurance may help cover some of the cost)
