Laser Dentistry

A new and wonderful era in dentistry has begun. Our high-tech office is pleased to offer this state-of-the-art technology to our patients. Dr. Mosby is the only dentist in the Coeur d' Alene area that is certified by the Academy of Laser Dentistry to use both hard and soft tissue lasers.  Lasers allow us to perform many different hard and soft tissue procedures with a minimally invasive approach.  Lasers also maximize patient comfort and offer better long term outcomes for dental restorations.

Hard Tissue (Tooth) Laser Dentistry Procedures:

        Dental Fillings/Tooth Preparations

  • Hard tissue lasers can be used in place of traditional dental drills for tooth preparation before dental fillings are placed.  Heat, vibration, and pressure are the primary causes of pain associated with the use of dental drills.  Since cutting both hard and soft tissues with dental lasers does not produce heat, vibration, or pressure, many dental procedures can be performed without anesthesia.  Dental lasers create a more precie preparation, and they also have the capability of killing the bacteria in the cavity, which ultimately results in a longer lasting filling.  The lasers can be used in many cases, but they are not suitable for the preparation of very large fillings or to remove existing metal fillings.

        Cavity Detection

  • The DIAGNOdent uses a low intensity laser to measure tooth density, which aids in cavity detection.  This allows diagnosis of tooth decay in its earliest stages, sometimes even before it is visible on xrays.

Soft Tissue (Gum) Laser Dentistry Procedures:

        Gum Surgery

  • Using a soft tissue laser for gum surgeries reduces the need for anesthetic and stitches in many cases.  Laser dentistry also minimizes post operative bleeding and swelling, which enhances healing and patient comfort.

        Periodontal Therapy

  • Periodontal (gum) disease is caused by aggressive strains of baceria that destroy the gums, bone and other supporting structures of the teeth.  Using soft tissue lasers after performing traditional periodontal therapies or "deep cleaning" sterilizes the periodontal pockets, which optimizes healing and patient comfort.
